We are excited to share that two Franklin County High School students received statewide recognition for their literary work. Kittie Perkins and Michaela Hogan placed as top winners in the Kentucky Educational Television (KET) 2026 Young Writers Contest.

Kittie Perkins, a FCHS Senior, earned third place in the High School Poetry division for her piece, "The Ghost of You." Michaela Hogan, FCHS Junior, earned third place in the Illustrated Story division for her children’s book, “Marlene The Perfect Lady Bug.”

"It's one of my favorite classes because it gives students the time to think, dabble, and create beyond the usual school assignments. Kittie used the poetry assignment to work through a difficult time in her life, and Michaela pushed her limits to write a sweet children's story with lovely illustrations,” said FCHS English Teacher Lynn Shaffer. “I'm so lucky to be able to facilitate this process and see the exciting results! Students surprise themselves with what they can do. Our class became a community, and we all celebrated when Kittie and Michaela were recognized in the writing contest; it was a great way to end the school year."

For Perkins, the poem is a result of a personal experience. She shared that the inspiration for "The Ghost of You" came in the wake of her biological father’s sudden passing, a man she had only met a handful of times.

"His sudden death shattered a part of me I didn't even know existed until that moment. In the midst of that sadness, I realized that I never truly knew this man. I was mourning the death of a stranger,” said FCHS Senior Kittie Perkins. “Even though I never truly knew him, he gave me the gift of writing. In the end, it brought me a sense of peace.”

🎉 Historic Win for Franklin County Schools!
For the first time in district history, an FCS student has placed at the Future Problem Solving World Finals! Huge congratulations to Vibhav Gudapati, a Bridgeport Elementary 5th grader and rising Bondurant Middle School 6th grader, who earned 2nd place in the Junior Scenario Performance division at the World Finals held at Indiana University! 11 countries and 33 states participated in this year's World Finals.

This historic achievement caps off a record-breaking year :
- This is the third consecutive year FCS students have qualified for the World Finals, sending our largest group of qualifiers yet from Bondurant Middle and Western Hills High School.
- Tanav Gudapati (WHHS freshman), also made history this year as the first WHHS student to qualify for the international championships after taking 2nd at State!
- The Junior Community Problem Solving team took 2nd at State for their incredible "Calming Corner" project at BMS, a safe, quiet space for students to pause, reset, and practice mindfulness before returning to their academic schedules.

We'd also like to give a shoutout to Head Coach Tammy Baker for her incredible dedication and leadership. Congratulations to all!

Franklin County High School DECA Marks Historic Year of Growth, Awards, and Leadership

Franklin County Schools is celebrating a historic, award-winning year for the Franklin County High School DECA chapter. Kentucky DECA, an organization with 2,800 members, is a student organization that helps students develop skills and experience in marketing and business. This year, FCHS brought home a third-place statewide award for the largest percentage increase in chapter growth in Kentucky, which translated into a dominant presence at competitive events, with the high school sending 51 attendees to the Regional Career Development Conference and 39 attendees to the State Career Development Conference.

On the national level, FCHS DECA earned “Achievement Level” status for its membership campaign. Individual excellence was recognized for 11th grade student Nishka Patel, who was named a “DECA Diamond in the Rough”, and advisor Shannon Brunette received the “Advisor's Scholarship.” The entire chapter earned the “Chapter Travel Scholarship” to support students in their competitive journeys.

“We are beyond proud of our students,” said Shannon Brunette, FCHS Business Teacher and DECA Advisor. “They have been the driving force behind our chapter’s success this year and have consistently represented our school and community with excellence. The future is very bright!”

Franklin County Schools Mourns the Loss of Franklin County High School Student KeAaron Jones

It is with profound sadness that Franklin County Schools shares the news of the passing of KeAaron Jones, a student at Franklin County High School (FCHS). KeAaron passed away on June 9th following a courageous battle with cancer. He would’ve been entering his junior year of high school.

KeAaron was an involved and talented member of the Flyer family. He was a dedicated member of the boys’ volleyball and basketball teams and the school’s choir and band programs, including the chamber choir and wind ensemble. He earned recognitions, including selection to the Kentucky Music Educators Association (KMEA) All-State Choir. He was also the recipient of the Paul Wyler Spirit Award for Resiliency.

“KeAaron will certainly be missed by all of our FCHS family. He was a pleasure to be around and was a light to his classmates, teammates, teachers, and community,” said Joey Thacker, FCHS Principal. “He leaves an unmatched legacy of kindness and humility at our school.”

Earlier this year, when the school became aware of KeAaron’s cancer diagnosis, the FCS community stepped in to support him and his family. In April, FCHS hosted the “Turn it Up!” volleyball tournament fundraiser. The event surpassed all expectations and raised over $10,000 for the Jones family.

“KeAaron and his family are some of the strongest people I have met. Knowing the diagnosis, they chose to smile and make others feel better,” said Tom Marshall, FCHS Boys Volleyball Coach. “His smile and positive attitude put his friends and teammates at ease. We are all better people because we knew him.”

FCHS will have school counselors available to assist students who may be experiencing grief or who wish to talk with someone. We encourage families to speak with their children about this loss and to reach out to FCHS if additional support is needed.

At this time, details regarding a funeral service have not been finalized. FCS will share those details with the community when it is available. FCS asks the public to respect the privacy of the Jones family as they mourn the loss of their loved one.

🎓 What an incredible year for our foreign exchange students! We are so proud of the international students who joined our school district this year, stepped out of their comfort zones, and are now part of the FCS alumni community.

Thank you to the The Frankfort State Journal for highlighting one of these amazing journeys, featuring Western Hills graduate Alessandro Orsi. We also want to extend a huge thank you to all of our host families who opened their homes, including our very own board member, Natalie Lile!

Thank you to everyone who helps make Franklin County a welcoming home away from home for students from all over the world.
