We are excited to share that the Western Hills Cheer Team is going to nationals! The UCA High School National Cheerleading Championship will take place from January 29-31, 2027, at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida. WHHS will compete in the Small Varsity Intermediate Division.

“Qualifying for the UCA High School National Cheerleading Competition is an incredible accomplishment, and I couldn’t be prouder of this team. It's a true honor to be back at Western Hills High School coaching the same program that helped shape me, and help these athletes create their own legacy,” said Christy Britton Franklin, Head Coach. “This team’s positive attitude, strong work ethic, and unwavering commitment to one another have made this journey so special. Their determination continues to push them to new heights, and I can’t wait to see them represent Franklin County Schools and Western Hills on the national stage in Orlando, Florida, this January.”

#RedRibbonWeek Franklin County High School is celebrating healthy, drug-free living all week long with activities, prizes, and giveaways! Check out all the ways students are getting involved.
🎨 Living Drug-Free Banner: Living drug-free means spending time with and doing the things you love most! Students are writing their answers on a sticky note and posting it to the banner.
🦆 The Great Duck Hunt: Tiny “say no to drugs” ducks are hidden all around the school! If you find one, you can trade it in for a gift card and a red ribbon sticker.
🦸‍♂️ Everyday Hero Nominations: Students are nominating teachers, staff, and peers as an “Everyday Hero” for spreading positivity and standing up for what’s right.
🎟️ End-of-Week Raffle: Anyone who’s participated in #RedRibbonWeek will earn a chance to win a gift card at the end of the week!

Kindness Counts! 💙
We feel so lucky to have such amazing staff members who care for our students. Two of our custodians at the Early Learning Village noticed that some kids weren't able to purchase a book at the book fair. Using their own money, they made sure those students could purchase a book they were excited about and take it home 📚

As we kick off #RedRibbonWeek, we are highlight a project that tackles one of the biggest health concerns facing students today: vaping. WHHS School Resource Officer, Mike Johnson wanted to take a more direct, eye-opening approach to showing students the dangers and realities of vaping.

Students and law enforcement working together display severe dental and skin damage, irreversible lung damage, and vape explosions. There is also a spot for students to write their name and take the pledge not to vape. Officer Johnson wanted the students to be directly involved so the message hits home.

“The biggest dangers of vaping are that we don't know what's really in them,” said Officer Johnson. “The majority of vaping devices are made overseas. We see students getting sick in school from using them. They are extremely addictive due to the high dosage of nicotine chemicals, and it’s scary that they can already be doing permanent damage to their lungs.”

The bulletin board is only the beginning. Students in Health and Emergency Procedure classes will be creating bulletins in the future, focusing on the dangers of THC vapes and gummies.​

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Department encourages families to network with school staff and law enforcement to discourage the use of vapes and educate them on the dangers associated with vaping. For additional resources, visit https://digitalmedia.hhs.gov/tobacco/educator_hub.

At the awards reception, New Vista stated, “What makes this partnership especially impactful is the level of engagement across the entire district. From central office administration to individual school staff, Franklin County Schools has fostered a culture of collaboration that makes it possible to connect students and families with the support they need.”

In recognition of America’s Safe Schools Week, we are celebrating the dedication and positive impact of our School Resource Officer (SRO) team. Serving as a crucial bridge between law enforcement and the FCS community, these officers work to keep schools safe so students can learn and grow.

The district’s SRO program has decades of professional experience, with the team holding a combined total of over 300 years in law enforcement. The team is made up of law enforcement officers who have held previous titles including Chiefs of Police, Jailers, Crimes Against Children Detectives, and high-ranking officials.

"Our community has invested a great deal of time and money in our careers and training," said Captain Jeff Abrams, SRO Division Commander. "Serving as an SRO is a wonderful opportunity to give back to the community that has supported us. Our children are our community’s most valuable and vulnerable asset, and we take immense pride in creating an environment where future leaders can thrive."

At the start of the 2022–2023 school year, FCS successfully placed full-time officers in every school. SROs maintain oversight of physical security across all facilities, including monitoring exterior doors, supporting staff in keeping classroom doors locked during instructional times, and actively monitoring security cameras. In addition to investigating any potential offenses on school property, they serve as the primary liaison with local first-responding agencies and provide dedicated law enforcement services for extracurricular activities, sporting events, and public-facing engagements.

The primary mission of the SRO team is visibility, presence, and relationship-building. Officers serve as mentors, teachers, coaches, counselors, and positive role models, working to foster lasting trust with the community.

"Many years ago, law enforcement had limited access through formal programs like D.A.R.E. to interact with kids and encourage positive behaviors," said Captain Abrams. "Now, we have that opportunity all day, every day within Franklin County Schools, and I have personally seen the positive impact. If you attend a school event, watch the SRO because they are consistently surrounded by students coming by for a fist bump, a hug, or a quick laugh. I am incredibly proud of the genuine relationships our team has built."

The Parade of Nations at Elkhorn Elementary School was an exciting celebration of the diverse cultures, backgrounds, and heritages that make this school community so special. Students and staff filled the hallways, cheering on classmates who proudly represented their roots. Great job, Elks and #OneTeamFCS!

We are excited to share that John and Linda Sams are October's Employee Champions of the Month. John and Linda are a husband-and-wife duo in the transportation department, serving as a bus driver and monitor.

John and Linda have hearts the size of a house. Their care for our students goes far beyond simply driving a bus. They make it their mission to help students feel safe, valued, and cared for every time they step onto their bus.

​A few examples of their kindness stand out. During a book fair, they heard some students didn’t have money to participate. They didn’t want any of their student riders to feel left out, so they gave the principal money so the children could buy their own book.

​On hot days, John and Linda have brought a small cooler of cold water for their students to have on their ride home. On another occasion, John was trimming limbs and brush back from a roadway. He wasn’t asked to do it, but he did because he saw a potential issue along his route and wanted to make it safer for his students.

​This duo doesn’t just transport students from Point A to Point B; they take ownership of their students’ well-being and safety, and treat them like family.

We are excited to share that Emerson Bowling is October’s Student Champion of the Month. Bowling is an 11th-grade student at Franklin County High School.

A dedicated student-athlete, Bowling excels in the classroom with a consistent 4.0 GPA while participating in a variety of extracurriculars, including golf, choir, Pep Club, DECA, FCA, Beta Club, and National Honor Society. She also serves as a junior class officer.

Despite recently overcoming an injury, Bowling delivered an incredible athletic performance, finishing as the Individual State Runner-Up in the State 2A Golf Tournament and guiding her team to a State Runner-Up finish. She showed similar resilience during the Regional Golf Tournament, placing 4th to secure her spot in the first round of the KHSAA State Tournament.

Beyond her academic and athletic achievements, Bowling uses her passion for golf to give back to others. She raised over $1,500 through the Liberty National Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) Grant to support aspiring young golfers aiming to play at the collegiate level. Additionally, she raised $1,250 for the Mason Goodnight Foundation, which supports local youth in Franklin County and the surrounding communities.

Bowling embodies the values of community service and leadership while being an advocate for her school and classmates. Congratulations to our October Champion of the Month, Emerson Bowling!

Our two high school girls volleyball teams went head-to-head in the “Pink Out” game. Beyond the spikes, digs, and rallies, seeing our FCS community come together in pink to honor Breast Cancer Awareness Month reminded us of what matters. We are proud of our athletes, coaches, and fans for their passion, sportsmanship, and support for a great cause.
