Franklin County Schools (FCS) is proud to announce that the Bondurant Middle School Lady Braves 8th-grade basketball team is the Bluegrass Conference tournament champion. The victory marks the second consecutive title for the team. The Lady Braves went undefeated in the regular season and earned the #1 seed in the North Division.

In the opening round of the tournament, the Lady Braves defeated Harrison County Middle 42-19, followed by a home win against the Lexington Christian Academy 38-18.

Before the final game, Head Coach Ashli Mayes and Assistant Coaches Patrice Tonge and Josiah Lemon focused heavily on preparation. Coach Mayes reminded the team of three ingredients they needed to win: To be relentless together so that when things don’t go their way, they do not point fingers at each other and instead come together; to have the heart of a lion and never give up; and to believe in themselves, their team, and their coaching staff.

In the finals, BMS competed against Robert D. Campbell Jr. High. Ava Curtis led the offense with a team-high 14 points, and she and Khloe Jeffries showed dominance in rebounds. Persistent defense from guards Ella Wooldridge, Elly Dutta, Aubree Moore, Lily Smith, and RicKhya Phillips forced critical stops. The Lady Braves secured the 42-32 championship win.

Prior to last season, BMS had not brought home a conference championship trophy since 2018, but now they stand as back-to-back champions.

“I am excited to watch this group keep growing together and the history they will make as a team when they are in high school," said Ashlie Mayes, Head Coach. "They have left their mark here, and it will take some time to build a team to replace the talent we are losing, but the players returning and future Lady Braves  now know what it takes to become a conference champion by the standard this 8th grade class has set.”
