Franklin County Schools (FCS) is proud to announce that the Western Hills High School (WHHS) Future Farmers of America (FFA) Land Judging Team took first place in the Capital City Region FFA Land Judging competition. The team of four, including Garret Culbertson, Michael Eades, Sophie Newton, and Saanvi Kassala, was first-time competitors taking on Spencer and Woodford Counties.
Land judging is a competition in which participants evaluate soil and land characteristics, including soil structure, slope, erosion, and other factors that affect how the land can be used and managed for agricultural homestead purposes. Competitors use what they observe in the field to make decisions about soil conservation and land management.
The WHHS team placed first overall and qualified for the state FFA land judging competition on November 5th. Team members Garrett Culbertson and Michael Eades also earned the first- and second-highest individual scores.
“It was rewarding to see all the hard work pay off, especially since none of us had done land judging before,” said FFA Team Member Saanvi Kassala. “We’re really excited to see what we can do at state.”
