Franklin County Schools (FCS) is proud to announce that Elkhorn Middle School teacher Rebecca Sowder has been named the 2026 Health Education Teacher of the Year by KYSHAPE.
KYSHAPE, a statewide organization dedicated to empowering educators in physical education, health, recreation, and dance, selects outstanding educators each year who demonstrate excellence in instruction, leadership, and service. Winners are nominated and then selected by the KYSHAPE Board of Directors. Following this state-level honor, Ms. Sowder will advance as a nominee for the SHAPE America Southern District Teacher of the Year.
Ms. Sowder teaches health and physical education to sixth- through eighth-grade students at Elkhorn Middle School. She has been an educator for seven years, serving students at Elkhorn Middle School throughout that time.
"Health education has the power to make such a positive, lasting impact on students’ lives, and I’m grateful for the opportunity every day to help students build real-life skills that support their health and well-being,” said Rebecca Sowder, PE and Health Teacher. “I’m incredibly honored to be named the Kentucky Health Education Teacher of the Year, and I’m thankful to do a job I love at the best school around. Go Elks!”
Elkhorn Middle School Principal Audra Hoofnagle commended Ms. Sowder for her creative and engaging approach to teaching that connects with students.
“Ms. Sowder is a master at planning fun and engaging skills-based lessons to ensure students have the tools they need to lead healthy lives,” said Audra Hoofnagle, Elkhorn Middle School Principal. “Our students at Elkhorn Middle School are fortunate to have such a passionate and dedicated teacher.”
Ms. Sowder is one of four educators across the Commonwealth being honored this year. She will be formally recognized during the opening Awards Reception of the 2026 KYSHAPE Summer Conference in Lexington on Wednesday, June 24.
