Back to School Bash-Traffic Protocol-Class Lists

We hope you’ve had a great summer!  In this communication, I am providing information about the Bash, classroom placements and as promised earlier in the summer, communication in regards to the transportation changes.

The Bash will take place on Monday, August 13th.  It will begin at 5:30 and conclude at 7:30.  Due to limited parking, we are staggering times for attending.  All teachers will be there the entire time for those with multiple children.  Second grade, fourth grade and fifth grade will have a parent meeting in the library during their scheduled times. The times are listed below:

PreK and Kindergarten 5:30 in classrooms
1st grade  6:30 in classrooms
2nd grade 6:00 in the library
3rd grade 6:30 in classrooms
4th grade 5:30 in the library
5th grade 7:00 in the library

Please stop by the gym during your visit, as we will have informational booths set up, including the car tag booth (explanation below).  PTO will also be providing snacks and CLE swag will be available for purchase.  Finally, the yearbooks have arrived and will be available for pick up and sale.

Traffic Protocol

The first thing you’re going to notice is the old car line for morning drop off and afternoon pick up.   The car line is now a mound of dirt and so I’m going to go over with you how this change will impact our morning and afternoon transportation. The only option you have is to come in from Cougar Lane.  We will no longer allow cars to come in from Leawood and Crosshill.  Only buses and staff will be able to come in from Crosshill, even if you are parking to go to the office or walking your child to class which I will discuss later in this communication.

For cars- As you come up Cougar Lane you will wait in line at the top of Cougar Lane at the stop sign until buses have exited the upper lot.  Keep in mind that the upper lot will not open until the buses are finished unloading. All buses are due to arrive and unload by 7:15. Our hope is that the car line will open no later than 7:20. Once unloaded you will follow the loop around the parking lot and exit out Crosshill. Now the lot currently appears a mess, but I have been assured that it will be cleared and ready by next week. This means the fence you may see will also be gone.

Let’s move on to afternoon pick up- The afternoon pick up will look very similar to morning drop off.  We will need to utilize the church parking lot as we did last year. Once the line on Cougar Lane fills to the entrance of the church lot, cars must begin filling the church lot.  If going into the church lot, go to the furthest part of the it first and circle around to the parking lot exit.  Once the furthest portion of the church lot is filled, begin a new line in the section of the it closest to Cougar Lane.  Once again, the cars will wait at the top of Cougar Lane until the buses have left the lot.

We do have a BIG change that we are emphasizing for afternoon pickup.  We will be adding staggered times to pick up.  You will need to get a car number at the Bash. Ms. Bunch will be in the gym handing out car tags.  Please see her before leaving that evening.   If you are unable to attend the Bash, please call the office.  If you are car numbers 1-75, you will pick up between 2:50 and 3:00.  If you are numbers 76 and up, you will pick up between 3:00 and 3:10.  This will help us keep waiting cars off of Collins Lane.

Finally, walkers.  If your child is a walker or you are parking on Leawood to try to avoid the car line, your child will be considered a walker.  All walkers will not be dismissed until all cars have gone through the line.

What will happen if you break the rules?

-If you try to come in from Crosshill, you will be stopped at the corner of Leawood and Crosshill and asked to turn around and enter from Cougar Lane.

-If you come to the afternoon car lane too early, you will be asked to leave the line and exit out Crosshill to return to the end of the line on Cougar Lane.  For instance, if you are car 80 and you arrive at the top of cougar lane at 2:55, you will be asked to leave the line, as we won’t have your child ready for dismissal.

-If you park on Leawood and walk up, you may wait for your child to be dismissed to you once all cars are finished.

We realize that these procedures may not be favorable for everyone, but they are in place to ensure safety and to be considerate of those who are following the correct procedures.  We apologize in advance for any aggravation this may cause.  This year will be a trying year where we will need to be flexible and patient.

Additional tidbits- I don’t think we will need to use the church lot for morning drop off.  If we start to notice that it is too congested, we may need to revise a bit of this plan.   Any portion of this plan  may be revised if we have unforeseen circumstances.

-We do allow families to walk to class on the first three days of school; although, it is not recommended as it will be unsafe, add to the congestion, and contribute to limited parking in our already small parking lot. Should you choose to park to enter the building you can try to come up Cougar Lane and park in the top parking lot; although, I feel like it’s going to be completely taken.  So, the best opportunity to park will probably be in the church lot.

-If you need to leave before your scheduled dismissal time, please come to the office and check your child out before 2:30.  We won’t be able to do check outs after 2:30 as it will add to the congestion.  With this said, I would advise that you schedule appointments outside of the school day or well after your scheduled dismissal time.

-If you believe your child will ever be a car rider, please sign up for a tag.

-We encourage independence!  Please teach your child to unbuckle their seatbelt and open and close doors independently.  Also, please place them on the passenger side of the vehicle.  Getting out of the vehicle to unload your child from the car or allowing them to exit from the driver’s side is a safety hazard and holds up the line.

-Once your child has unloaded, please do not pass the cars in front of you.

Finally, we appreciate your understanding of some of our changes and hope that we can work together positively to create the safest and efficient plan possible with our situation.  Please refer to the attached map and video link below.
